Saturday, July 19, 2025 (7:00 pm) OKSANA KAZMINA: CONTEMPORARY HISTORY OF UKRAINE Aurora Picture Show – 5601A Navigation Blvd. Co-presented by Aurora Picture Show and Basket Books & Art $10 / Free for Aurora Members
Aurora and Basket Books & Art co-present an interactive performance-lecture, Contemporary History of Ukraine (CHU), by Ukrainian artist Oksana Kazmina. Kazmina presents a live mosaic of audiovisual materials from her personal archives, including footage from Kyiv’s underground art and music culture of the past decade, film expeditions to Eastern Ukraine with cine-movement NGO Freefilmers, maps, microscopic imaging of Kazmina’s biome, and more. This intimate and evocative presentation offers a layered perspective on war, history, and the relationship between the body and territory. The event concludes with a reception featuring hands on silk-screening with the artist (bring your own t-shirts, etc.) and Basket Books & Art’s selection of publications (including Kazmina’s zine, co-edited by Kateryna Badianova and designed by Uliana Bychenkova).
Note: intended for mature audiences.
About the silk-screening: The printed text is Yebenia, alternatively Mestyak, meaning a place of pleasure that denies, ignores, or undermines structures of power, in a typeface commissioned by NGO Freefilmers and influenced paradoxically by both hard-lined brutalist typography and the unruly plant life in Kyiv’s Korchuvate district.
