Sindhu Thirumalaisamy: Concrete Stories

SINDHU THIRUMALAISAMY: CONCRETE STORIES
Saturday, October 11 (7pm)
Aurora Picture Show – 5601A Navigation Blvd.

$10 / Free for Aurora members

Aurora presents Houston-based artist Sindhu Thirumalaisamy’s concrete stories, an immersive program incorporating moving images, sounds, and writings by the artist and her collaborators. This project comes out of long-term visual research into the “set and forget” logic of hyper-development in wetland regions of both the U.S. Gulf Coast and Southern India. A response to the prioritization of infrastructures over regional lifeways, this work invites us to think about the making and unmaking of places, and about materials that are not only “out there” but also inside us. concerete stories includes a live reading of poetry by artist, activist/organizer, critic, and educator, Ahimsa Timoteo Bodhrán. A Q&A with the artist follows the program.

Sindhu Thirumalaisamy is an artist, filmmaker, and assistant professor of art at Rice University. Sindhu trained as a filmmaker at the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore; received an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego; and is an alumna of the Whitney Independent Study Program. Her work has screened at venues and festivals including BlackStar Film Festival, RIDM, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Courtisane Festival, Camden Film Festival, Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center, Union Docs, Artists Television Access, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, San Diego Museum of Art, EFA Project Space, Locust Projects, Lawndale Art Center, Workers Arts & Heritage Centre, and Moody Center for the Arts.
