Aurora Picture Show’s Extremely Shorts Film Festival is an eclectic showcase of adventurous, new short films (3 minutes or shorter) of all kinds from around the world. This year’s guest juror, documentary filmmaker and educator Elaine McMillion Sheldon, has selected the films from global submissions. The 25th annual Extremely Shorts festival program features short films from 12 countries–the United States (including several made in Texas), Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, Israel, and Iran. The program will have two in-person screenings on May 20 and 21 at Aurora Picture Show in Houston, with some of the participating filmmakers scheduled to attend. The program will also stream online for three days, May 27-29. As always, audiences are invited to vote for their favorite films, and cash prizes will be awarded for both Audience Choice and Juror Choice films.
Guest Juror Elaine McMillion Sheldon is an Academy Award-nominated and Peabody-winning documentary filmmaker based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Sheldon is a 2021 Creative Capital Awardee, a 2021 Livingston Award Finalist, and a 2020 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow. Sheldon is director of Tutwiler, a rare and intimate look at motherhood inside one of America's most notorious prisons, and two Netflix Original Documentaries exploring the country’s opioid crisis–Heroin(e) and Recovery Boys. She’s currently in-production on a feature-length documentary King Coal. Sheldon is also a founding member of All Y'all Southern Documentary Collective.
