Popcorn Kids

Aurora is proud to host Popcorn Kids, a series of programs geared toward children that encourage media literacy and education from a young age.  This includes free family film screenings, summer filmmaking camps and outreach to youth hospitals, community groups and schools for on-site workshops.

Popcorn Kids programs explore using media as a forum for creative exchange and teach skills with media making.  In addition to workshops hosted at the Aurora Video Library, Popcorn Kids programs also tour into the community.  By working with partners such as Writers In The Schools, Project Row Houses, Texas Children's Hospital Cancer Center Art In Medicine Program and Young Audiences of Houston, Aurora works with established community programs geared toward youth. Samples of our Mobile Media Literacy Outreach can be viewed here. From local filmmakers to outside guests from around the country, Popcorn Kids screenings and workshops have included artists such as The Striking Viking Story Pirates, A/V Geeks and Pancake Mountain. If you are an educator, we encourage you to contact us to learn more about how to bring a workshop or film screening to your students.

The Aurora Boot Camp is a summer filmmaking experience that teaches hands-on narrative and experimental techniques using digital video under the supervision of a professional filmmaker. Using the Aurora Video Library, students explore examples of experimental, documentary and short narrative videos for inspiration.  Topics include story structures and writing, direction, camera operation, sound and editing. At the end of the class students will receive a DVD of their own short length video. Finished films are screened for family and friends at a culminating World Premiere showcase.

Aurora offers discounted membership to encourage participation from as early as age 8 (Popcorn Kids Membership) on to college (Student Level Membership).

Special thanks to the Brown Foundation, Hot Topic Foundation, Kinder Morgan Foundation, Target and IKEA Houston for their support of Popcorn Kids Programming.  If you are interested in donating or supporting our youth education initiatives, we need your help to make these programs free and accessible to the community.  Please become a member, make a donation or contact us regarding sponsorship.
